Life Is

  1. Ale Mercado illustration for File Is by Elizabeth Maley

My life is bleached hair and blue skirts
Fake nails and concerts
Happiness and outbursts
Problematic downturns
Raising concerns and taking turns
Taking pics and stirring up storms
Fitting in with the norms
While wearing the school uniform
Life is school and life is home
but life is only what you make it.

Note From Editor
This poem feels almost like a rap, or a spoken word piece, with its tight, punchy rhyme and rhythm and its focus on everyday concerns. It takes us on a breathless roller-coaster ride through the ups and downs of life, and ends on a pithy message of acceptance and optimism. It would be great read aloud!
