I love sports all types of sports
I love badminton, hurling and all the above
I love the clothes the tops the sicks the shorts
I love the tussle the rucks and the shoves
I love the competition the winnings the loses
I love the equipment the hurls the rackets
From the clears to the crosses

All of the lines in this short poem begin with the phrase, ‘I love,’ with each being a complete statement in itself. The only exception to this happens on the penultimate line which, allowed to run on into the poem’s last line, put me in mind of a goal being sent straight to the back of the net! That final line, ‘From the clears to the crosses’ felt to me like the perfect way to finish a poem that from the outset signalled its passion about sports in general.
